Born In A Car Crash - A Guide To Choice 1950s and 60s Rhythm and Blues 45s BOOK Long Road Society

    £30.00
“Born In A Car Crash” is a guide to 1950s and 60s rhythm and blues 45s - artifacts of an incredibly fertile period of black American music and a time of signifi cant cultural upheaval. R&B was a constant thread through the complex tapestry of racial segregation, international confl ict, and the civil rights movement. The universal appeal of 1950s and 60s R&B continues to bring disparate groups of society together during incredibly divisive political times. “Born In A Car Crash” highlights essential tracks from an era of profound creativity, entrepreneurship, and inspiration. It aims to shine a light on the musicians, producers, and labels that leveraged everything they had to create music for the people.

Led by legendary drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, The 18th Parallel tried to dive deep into the reggae of 1975 to bring back this feeling on ‘HOLD ON’: flying riddim, choping guitar, heavy filter mix by Roberto Sánchez and the one and only Cornell Campbell himself behind the microphone. • Lorna Nelson - Deh Pon De Low 7" Ralph Holness TRS

Lorna Nelson - Deh Pon De Low 7" Ralph Holness TRS

    £10.99
A collaborative effort released on Ralph Holness' imprint back in 1984, TRS is pleased to announce the reissue of this proto-digi gem "Deh Pon De Low". Written by one of JA's finest, unrecognised songwriting talents, Carl 'Jackie' Estick and co-produced/arranged by Errol O'Meally. To top it off and seal the deal, this cherry is sung over by songstress Lorna Nelson. In the raw and unfiltered words of O'Meally, "Jamaicans will recognise that name (Ralph Holness) as the king of so-called 'Roots' Theatre for a number of years, based at The Ward Theatre in the heart of Parade, Downtown Kingston. Ralph was a real character and after dominating the theatre business producing broad raucous comedies that appealed to the masses and made him a fortune, he decided to make a foray into the real pool of sharks, music producing. Needless to say, I doubt if any of us, apart from whichever studio we used, got any money from Ralph, for our endeavours and it has been submerged in the rest of the morass of dues-paying that any young, starving striver in the business was doomed to go through in those days. Still, the tune doesn't sound too dusty". Ralph Holness had a passion for his work. If you didn't know him, you would think he was aggressive, but it was really a desire to make a production come together in the right way. When him talk is like thunder roll. Everybody talking bout "money-money" and everybody soon get maddy-maddy. Things nowadays get slacky-slacky and some a them a run from decency. Me say Lord woy, everything deh pon de low.

Pluto Pluck - The Good Thing / I Want You Now 12" PBS TRS

    £16.99
TRS Records is proud to announce the long-awaited reissue of this undercover gemstone. “Anything other than gospel music was a sin,” Rudolph “Pluto Pluck” Richards said of his formative years on Hagley Park Road near Half Way Tree in Kingston, Jamaica. Despite his strict Christian upbringing, the wafts of music and smoke pouring in from neighbourhood dancehall parties were too great an allure. By the time he was a young man, his head was swirling with “girls, parties, fun stuff,” Richards recalled. Taking inspiration from times spent in the presence of local celebrity Bob Marley— who would often greet him with a “wah happen yout”. Richards crafted “The Good Thing” in 1981. Issued under the name Pluto Pluck on Wesley Wint’s Prospect Heights, Brooklyn-based PLD concern, “The Good Thing” is a dreamy and addictive reggae expression of romance and youthful discovery.

    £20.99
Rico started his career in the late 1950’s playing with the likes of Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken and Max Romeo as a session musician in addition to creating his own recordings. He moved to the UK in the early 60’s and continued performing live and playing as a session musician. He signed to Island Records in the 70’s, releasing his first solo albums. In 1979 Rico met Jerry Dammers and began playing with The Specials. He became an honorary member of the band and featured prominently on some of their most famous tracks, along with Dick Cuthell, which produced a distinctive sound. In 1980 he released his first album for the 2 Tone label, That Man is Forward. Jama Rico was the second album released on 2 Tone Records in 1982. This album felt like a celebration of Jamaican musicians - Jama Rico was an altogether different beast. This was a more resolute statement, more African in its rhythms and a hidden treasure within the 2 Tone label. This time the recording sessions were split between Joe Gibbs studio in Jamaica and sessions at London’s Town House Studios. The Jamaican sessions again were produced by Dick Cuthell and comprised of musician friends Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Headley Bennett, and Ansel Collins. The London sessions, produced by Dick and Jerry Dammers, featured Specials John Bradbury and Horace Panter, along with Tony Utah and Satch Dixon. This new remaster, originally released in May 1982, is a part of the ongoing 2 Tone ‘40th Anniversary’ releases. The package is a 3mm Spined Sleeve, 180gm Heavyweight Black Vinyl, printed inner and bellyband.

Soul Revivers feat. Earl Sixteen - Got To Live / Living Version 7" Acid Jazz

    £8.99
Got to Live is a vintage-style, roots reality song, featuring veteran reggae vocalist Earl 16. Earl started his recording career in 1975 as lead vocalist for the Flaming Phonics, a group he formed while still a schoolboy in Kingston, Jamaica. Earl went on to record for Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, Derrick Harriott, Joe Gibbs and Roy Cousins, before moving to the London in 1985. Here he worked with Mad Professor amongst others, but also stepped outside of reggae to work with Leftfield, who he still tours with. Soul Revivers' Nick Manasseh has recorded with Earl for thirty years now, while David Hill has known him for fifteen years – Sixteen being a regular crowd-pleasing guest at his long-running Rootikal dance in London. Got to Live features Adrian McKenzie on the drum kit, with Jonah Dan on repeater drum and Spry on percussion. Add a three-part horns section and Manasseh's artful live-desk-mixdown, and this majestic tune is guaranteed to drop heavy. The flip holds Living Version, a instrumental track that is less about the dubwise, but is built for MCs. Entering 2021, it’s a good time to be reminded that we’ve all got to live. ‘top gear new British reggae from Soul Revivers’ - David Rodigan, BBC Radio 1xtra
  • Steve Cropper - Fire It Up LP Provogue

Steve Cropper - Fire It Up LP Provogue

    £23.99
The term "Guitar Hero" is bandied about loosely these days. Seems like all you have to do is look good holding the thing and you qualify. But if you ask the actual guitar heroes - like Brian May, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton - who Their Guitar Heroes are, Steve Cropper is definitely on the shortlist. If all he had done were the records with Otis Redding that would be enough, but shortly thereafter he was leaving his fingerprints on records by Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Johnny Taylor, Albert King, and virtually anybody worthy who came within earshot of Memphis. He was a Guitarist's Guitarist, and a Songwriter's Songwriter. Fire It Up is Steve Cropper's first album of new Soul / R&B material in 10 years. The album was produced by Steve and Jon Tiven.

(This guide also features reviews of 2 Tone-adjacent releases that you need to know about.) Ska music writer Stephen Shafer was Moon Ska Records “director of propaganda” during the 1990s and played a significant, behind-the-scenes role in making the so-called American “Third Wave” of ska happen. With a foreword by Gaz Mayall (The Trojans, Gaz's Rockin' Records, Gaz's Rockin' Blues, and co-writer of The Bodysnatchers' "Ruder Than You"), "The Duff Guide to 2 Tone" draws from over 12 years of Shafer’s reviews from his Duff Guide to Ska blog—and this collection not only provides a critical overview of 2 Tone’s ever-growing body of work, it also documents the continuing and largely unwritten history of these bands, as well as 2 Tone’s lasting impact well into the 21st century.

    £10.99
THE SPECIALS are one of the defining bands of the late 70’s/early 80’s along with Jerry Dammers iconic label Two Tone Records. They combined Jamaican ska and Rocksteady mixed with the energy of punk and launched a whole Ska Revival which paved the way for fellow likeminded bands Madness, The Beat and The Selecter to release their first singles. Having had seven top 10 singles and two Gold albums over the course of two years, the band released Jerry Dammers’ Ghost Town in June 1981, backed by Lynval Goldings’ Why? and the Terry Hall penned Friday Night Saturday Morning. The beginnings of the song were written around the closure of the Larcano dancehall in Coventry, but also reflecting what was happening in other towns and cities with urban decay, unemployment and ongoing racial tensions of the period. Themes which are still relevant today. The single, which was recently voted the second greatest UK single of all time by Alexis Petridis in the Guardian, reached Number One in the UK singles charts and stayed there for a further 3 weeks, becoming one of the biggest selling singles of 1981 and has remained one of the classic UK singles of all. This 40th Anniversary Edition has been mastered and cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios using the original production tapes for optimum audio quality.

The Trojan Story 50th Anniversary Box set (3LP) Trojan Records

One of the most significant collections in Trojan’s immense catalogue, the ‘The Trojan Story’ album dramatically changed the perception of Jamaican music among the general British public outside of the country’s Afro-Caribbean population. Prior to its release in 1971 there had never been an attempt to present a comprehensive anthology of the island’s musical development, with vintage ska, rock steady and reggae widely regarded as obsolete and of precious little merit. The treble disc set, which became an instant best-seller, had been the brainchild of Trojan’s label manager and Black Music fan, Rob Bell, who, assisted by Trojan stalwarts, Dandy, Webster Shrowder and Joe Sinclair, produced arguably the most significant Jamaican music retrospectives of all time. Now, 50 years following its original release, this hugely influential album has been revisited by Bell, along with reggae musician, Rusty Zinn, who have succeeded in improving what was already an almost perfect collection. Presented in the original eye-catching artwork, the set is further enhanced by a highly illustrated 50-page booklet in which Bell relates the stories behind the release and the 50 tracks featured on the compilation.

Tiawa & Manasseh - Pain Killa 7" Roots Garden Records

    £9.49
Roots Garden records are proud to present the debut single from talented up and coming singer songwriter Tiawa. Producer Nick Manasseh provides an upbeat, fresh & contemporary style reggae riddim track. Its sophisticated production, sound and infectious analogue bassline provide the perfect backdrop for Tiawa’s deep, soulful & melodic vocal style. The songs heartfelt message and universal theme demonstrate Tiawa’s credentials as an accomplished songwriter. A call to the collective consciousness, she reminds us of the power of our love to conquer & overcome oppression “living in a high vibration, tired of low expectation… So let us love, don’t break it up. Let the love shine bright and raise it up… because a hearts like a natural pain killer…” Manasseh unleashes lush reverbs and cascading delays, the drums and bass taking centre stage for the dubwise version.

U-Roy - Solid Gold CD Trojan Jamaica

    £11.99
Final full length album by the reggae star. The album was originally set to come out in 2020 with plans for a worldwide tour in support, but unfortunately, the pandemic delayed the release. Now, with the heartbreaking loss of U-Roy on February 17th, the album has become a celebration of one of the most profoundly influential reggae stars of his generation. An originator of the chatty rhythmic vocal style known as toasting - a key foundational element in the development of rap in its nascent stages in the 1970's. U-Roy left behind an unmatched legacy which is clearly on display on 'Solid Gold', with its guest appearances including Ziggy Marley, Shaggy, Mick Jones of The Clash, Santigold, Sly & Robbie, David Hinds of Steel Pulse and more.

  • Winston Groovy / Laurel Aitken - Skinhead A Wreck The Town / Moon Rock 7" Aggrobeat

Winston Groovy / Laurel Aitken - Skinhead A Wreck The Town / Moon Rock 7" Aggrobeat

    £10.00
'Skinhead Wreck The Town / Moon Rock' is another highly collectable single produced by Laurel Aitken and was issued in 1969 as a blank label pre-release only. The song 'Skinhead Wreck The Town' on the A-side is often miscredited to Laurel Aitken, but in fact the vocal duties were done by none less than Winston Groovy. Later in his career Winston Groovy gained succes with songs like 'Please Don't Make Me Cry' (which was also covered by UB40) and with his adaption of The Commodores song 'Nightshift'. The song 'Moon Rock' on the flipside is a typical Laurel Aitken song like he wrote so many during those days. Although Aitken is often praised as the Godfather of Ska, his important contribution to the early days of reggae may not be overlooked either. Despite the great quality of both songs, this reissue is the first time since 1969 that both songs are available again in its original format. Exclusively for this reissue we have remastered both songs for vinyl to deliver the best possible sound quality. The single is pressed on recycled eco vinyl(!) and includes a heavy weight insert with liner notes. Format & package: 7" single Year of release: 2020 (reissued from 1969) Tracks: A Winston Groovy - Skinhead Wreck The Town B Laurel Aitken - Moon Rock

  • Witness - Mercy Gone / Witness ft Mr Williamz - Mercy Gone Part 2 7" Fruits Records

Witness - Mercy Gone / Witness ft Mr Williamz - Mercy Gone Part 2 7" Fruits Records

    £8.99
Probably one of the most sought-after Jamaican roots reggae tracks by record collectors, 'MERCY GONE' is both an obscure and iconic sound system tune. Originally performed by the equally obscure 1NY and Soul Syndicate, 'Mercy Gone' captures the essence of 70s roots reggae: a slow tempo with a bouncing uptempo skank, inventive drumming and a compelling bass line, a raw but powerful sound, and a plaintive voice whose emotion reflects the harsh reality of the sufferer's life. The 18th Parallel wanted to offer their own version of this classic, an original record that is now unavailable and estimated to be worth thousands of dollars. To do so, the producers found a young singer of only twenty years old with undeniable talent, but still unknown to the public: Witness. Originally from Swaziland, Philisiwe ‘Witness’ Lukhele delivers her own interpretation of ‘Mercy Gone’ on an original riddim by The 18th Parallel. Without trying to identically reproduce the original, Witness and The 18th Parallel offer a powerful and modernised recut that still is faithful to the aesthetics of the Jamaican sound of the 70s. Above all, they finally give sound systems the opportunity to play this anthem, which was previously inaccessible on a 7" single. The icing on the cake on the B-side: one of the most prominent DJs on the current British sound system scene, Mr. Williamz, takes over and mash up the dance! Rewind!
