  • Alton Ellis - Road To Slavery / Dubwise To Slavery 7" Fashion TRS

Alton Ellis - Road To Slavery / Dubwise To Slavery 7" Fashion TRS

    £10.99
In the words of Chris Lane from the Fashion Records... "We recorded and produced many of reggae's most iconic artists for Fashion Records, but having a legend of ska, rock steady and reggae - and my all-time favourite singer! - in the studio was always an unforgettable experience. Although we concentrated on building our roster with local UK artists we were only too happy to take any opportunity to record Jamaican singers and deejays when we could, so of course Alton was a prime contender, especially as he was living in London when we first recorded him in 1981. We were eager to record him again fifteen years later, but although we built seven or eight rhythms not all of them were voiced, and unfortunately our plan of producing a whole album with Alton fell through. Road To Slavery was a brand new song written by Alton especially for the proposed album with Fashion Records, and is one of the few tunes that he recorded a proper vocal for. It's the first time it has seen the light of day since it was voiced on the 28th March 1996 - as far as I can recall we've never even given it to anyone as a dub plate and we are delighted that it is finally being pressed up as a 45. It's good to know that the legacy of Jamaica's finest singer will live on .... RIP Alton Ellis." Alton Ellis - Road To Slavery 7" vinyl in stock now
  • Andy Tosh - Lick A Shot / Frankie Wilmott -Sensimilla 13" Sipho TRS

Andy Tosh - Lick A Shot / Frankie Wilmott -Sensimilla 13" Sipho TRS

    £14.99
2019 is off to a hot start as TRS present this double sided Digi-thriller from 1987 produced by Ras Sipho. Originally released on his uncle Jimmy Cliff's Oneness label, Newton “Sipho” Merritt learned his production craft from the best being naturally exposed to the music and destined to become a producer himself. In the days when Reggae was taking a digital turn, Sipho took on the duties of bringing up rising artists of that time such as Andy Tosh and Frankie Willmott to name a few. Both here featured with 'Lick A Shot" and 'Sensimilla' (aka Give Me No Rock) resurfaced here again. As far as the name "Sipho" goes, Merritt explains that when he was in South Africa, on tour with the Oneness band he saw a local woman in tears, looking at him. Through an interpreter, he found out her son had been killed in a South African uprising, looked exactly like him. “I told her that I will be her new son, but I didn’t have an African name. She called me Sipho, which means gifted in Zulu. That’s what I go by."

Born In A Car Crash - A Guide To Choice 1950s and 60s Rhythm and Blues 45s BOOK Long Road Society

“Born In A Car Crash” is a guide to 1950s and 60s rhythm and blues 45s - artifacts of an incredibly fertile period of black American music and a time of signifi cant cultural upheaval. R&B was a constant thread through the complex tapestry of racial segregation, international confl ict, and the civil rights movement. The universal appeal of 1950s and 60s R&B continues to bring disparate groups of society together during incredibly divisive political times. “Born In A Car Crash” highlights essential tracks from an era of profound creativity, entrepreneurship, and inspiration. It aims to shine a light on the musicians, producers, and labels that leveraged everything they had to create music for the people.

    Laurel Aitken - Benwood Dick / Apollo 12 7 " Aggrobeat

    £10.00
' Benwood Dick / Apollo 12' is one of the most collectable Laurel Aitken singles. It was originally issued in 1969 as a pre-release only, but sadly the final release was canceled and replaced with the - less sexual orientated - 'Mr. Popcorn 'single. Where the suggestive lyrics of 'Benwood Dick' on the A-side deal with the topic of a big shaped man, the B-side starts off with Aitken chanting: "This is a sensation, all over the nation. Read all about it! Read all about it! Skinhead invasion! ". This explains why the song 'Apollo 12' is also known as 'Skinhead Invasion'. The song is carried by a heavy base line which makes the song suitable for some good moonstomp dancing. By its skinhead references the song 'Apollo 12' Despite the cult status this is the first time since its release over fifty years ago that this single is being reissued in its original format. Exclusively for this reissue we have remastered both songs for vinyl to deliver the best possible sound quality. The single is pressed on recycled eco vinyl (!) And includes a heavy weight insert with liner notes. Format & package: 7 "single Year of release: 2020 (reissued from 1969) Tracks: A Benwood Dick B Apollo 12 (Skinhead Invasion)

By the time he was a young man, his head was swirling with “girls, parties, fun stuff,” Richards recalled. Taking inspiration from times spent in the presence of local celebrity Bob Marley— who would often greet him with a “wah happen yout”. Richards crafted “The Good Thing” in 1981. Issued under the name Pluto Pluck on Wesley Wint’s Prospect Heights, Brooklyn-based PLD concern, “The Good Thing” is a dreamy and addictive reggae expression of romance and youthful discovery.

Soul Revivers feat. Earl Sixteen - Got To Live / Living Version 7" Acid Jazz

    £8.99
Got to Live is a vintage-style, roots reality song, featuring veteran reggae vocalist Earl 16. Earl started his recording career in 1975 as lead vocalist for the Flaming Phonics, a group he formed while still a schoolboy in Kingston, Jamaica. Earl went on to record for Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, Derrick Harriott, Joe Gibbs and Roy Cousins, before moving to the London in 1985. Here he worked with Mad Professor amongst others, but also stepped outside of reggae to work with Leftfield, who he still tours with. Soul Revivers' Nick Manasseh has recorded with Earl for thirty years now, while David Hill has known him for fifteen years – Sixteen being a regular crowd-pleasing guest at his long-running Rootikal dance in London. Got to Live features Adrian McKenzie on the drum kit, with Jonah Dan on repeater drum and Spry on percussion. Add a three-part horns section and Manasseh's artful live-desk-mixdown, and this majestic tune is guaranteed to drop heavy. The flip holds Living Version, a instrumental track that is less about the dubwise, but is built for MCs. Entering 2021, it’s a good time to be reminded that we’ve all got to live. ‘top gear new British reggae from Soul Revivers’ - David Rodigan, BBC Radio 1xtra

The track has also been getting heavy rotation on Jazz FM having stayed in the playlist for the last 4 weeks. “Nick and I have loved the music of Ernest Ranglin since the 80s, which was when we first discovered the unique sound of his guitar on those classic Studio One rhythms. • Steve Becker - War 7" Collar Records TRS

Steve Becker - War 7" Collar Records TRS

    £8.99
Forwarding along with another Collar Records banger! Once again featuring the slick production of Leroy “Badness” Pennicott with another forgotten track this time by Steve Becker titled “War”. In the early 80’s Leroy Pennicott was one of the back-bone members for Augustus Pablo’s Rockers All-Stars playing rhythm guitar and bass on hundreds of recordings, and even touring extensively around the globe. He was also an instrumental force behind many of the early 80’s High Times recordings with Earl Chinna Smith. Always humble and preferring to stay out of the lime light, the multi-skilled Pennicott under the guidance of Pablo and Chinna lead a natural progression to producing. Pennicott first teamed up with long time friend Steve Becker, who go back from youth days in the Greenwich Farm community of Kingston. At the time due to a circumstance, Pennicott asked former band mate Pablo if his first production could be released under the Rockers imprint, to which Pablo happily agreed and helped finance the project. As Pennicott recalls “War” was written as a response and social commentary about the strife and dangers of their surroundings, and being just as relevant if not more in 2018. Earth shattering rhythm remastered from the sources available through TRS Records.

Steve Cropper - Fire It Up LP Provogue

    £23.99
The term "Guitar Hero" is bandied about loosely these days. Seems like all you have to do is look good holding the thing and you qualify. But if you ask the actual guitar heroes - like Brian May, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton - who Their Guitar Heroes are, Steve Cropper is definitely on the shortlist. If all he had done were the records with Otis Redding that would be enough, but shortly thereafter he was leaving his fingerprints on records by Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Johnny Taylor, Albert King, and virtually anybody worthy who came within earshot of Memphis. He was a Guitarist's Guitarist, and a Songwriter's Songwriter. Fire It Up is Steve Cropper's first album of new Soul / R&B material in 10 years. The album was produced by Steve and Jon Tiven.

The six-piece group of multi-talented instrumentalists has five lead singers, four songwriters and four arrangers. The music that grows from the contact of such persons is evidenced in this album. It is Sweet Maya (the Illusion) that flows through and shapes the many idioms of their music. It is Rob Hayes, Tom Davis, Janice Lakers, John Chamberlin, and Mark Bowen who convey the experience. £11.49
"The Duff Guide to 2 Tone" features over 70 reviews of reissues of essential 2 Tone albums from The Specials & The Special AKA, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness, The Bodysnatchers, and Bad Manners, as well as write-ups of their more recent records, gigs, books, and movies—which no self-respecting fan of 2 Tone should miss! (This guide also features reviews of 2 Tone-adjacent releases that you need to know about.) Ska music writer Stephen Shafer was Moon Ska Records “director of propaganda” during the 1990s and played a significant, behind-the-scenes role in making the so-called American “Third Wave” of ska happen. With a foreword by Gaz Mayall (The Trojans, Gaz's Rockin' Records, Gaz's Rockin' Blues, and co-writer of The Bodysnatchers' "Ruder Than You"), "The Duff Guide to 2 Tone" draws from over 12 years of Shafer’s reviews from his Duff Guide to Ska blog—and this collection not only provides a critical overview of 2 Tone’s ever-growing body of work, it also documents the continuing and largely unwritten history of these bands, as well as 2 Tone’s lasting impact well into the 21st century.
  • The Versatiles - Give It To Me / Tiger & The Versatiles - Hot 7" Aggrobeat

The Versatiles - Give It To Me / Tiger & The Versatiles - Hot 7" Aggrobeat

    £10.00
This single with Tiger and The Versatiles was originally released in 1971 in the United Kingdom by New Beat Records. Both songs were written and produced by Laurel Aitken and released during his 'High Priest of Reggae' era, when he put out new reggae singles almost on a weekly basis. This is the first official reissue and we pressed this one on recycled eco(!) vinyl and the single includes a 300grams insert with liner notes. Because the original master tapes are long time gone, we had to transfer the recordings from vinyl, a method which is often used to restore the loss of original sound recordings. Because of its analogue format, vinyl is ideally suited to do so. After transfer we remastered the recordings for vinyl. Format & package: 7" single Year of release: 2021 (reissued from 1971)
