    £30.00
“Born In A Car Crash” is a guide to 1950s and 60s rhythm and blues 45s - artifacts of an incredibly fertile period of black American music and a time of signifi cant cultural upheaval. The universal appeal of 1950s and 60s R&B continues to bring disparate groups of society together during incredibly divisive political times. “Born In A Car Crash” highlights essential tracks from an era of profound creativity, entrepreneurship, and inspiration. It aims to shine a light on the musicians, producers, and labels that leveraged everything they had to create music for the people.

  • Gaudi - 100 Years Of Theremin (The Dub Chapter) LP Dubmission Records

Gaudi - 100 Years Of Theremin (The Dub Chapter) LP Dubmission Records

    £17.99
To celebrate 100 years of the Theremin, super producer Gaudi and friends have created an album of Theremin infused dub. Developed in 1920 by Russian physicist Léon Theremin, the Theremin is an electronic device which works with magnetic fields and consists of one metal antenna controlled without physical contact. Predominantly a fairly niche instrument, it has featured in several styles of music since its creation, from classical works to sci-fi movie soundtracks, pop and rock. Gaudi was supported in this tribute by five of the world's top dub producers - Mad Professor, Adrian Sherwood, The Scientist, Dennis Bovell and Prince Fatty. All hugely respected individuals who have been representing the best of international dub production for the last 50 years, they have provided the riddims that underpin Gaudi's Theremin playing on this astonishing project. As a solo artist, Gaudi has recorded over 20 albums, while as a producer he has hundreds of productions under his belt. In his 30 year career he has worked with legends of the reggae and electronic music worlds including Steel Pulse, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Michael Rose, Horace Andy, Michael Franti, Zion Train, Maxi Priest, The Beat, Sizzla, Dub Pistols, Hollie Cook, Dub FX, Youth, The Orb, Simple Minds, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Deep Forest, Trentemøller and Lamb. As a Theremin player for over 25 years, Gaudi has often combined his passion for the instrument and for reggae music, playing it on several of his albums, but until now he has never dedicated an entire release to it. Known and lauded for putting his "dub-take" on many musical genres, '100 Years of Theremin (The Dub Chapter)' is Gaudi's brainchild. Listening to this blissful out-of-body-experience of an album, where roots reggae meets the enigmatic and ethereal sounds of sci-fi, is a deep and pensive experience. Haunting and mellifluous melodies meets earthy, bassy grooves in an unlikely yet undeniably successful union.

    Laurel Aitken - Benwood Dick / Apollo 12 7 " Aggrobeat

    £10.00
' Benwood Dick / Apollo 12' is one of the most collectable Laurel Aitken singles. It was originally issued in 1969 as a pre-release only, but sadly the final release was canceled and replaced with the - less sexual orientated - 'Mr. Popcorn 'single. Where the suggestive lyrics of 'Benwood Dick' on the A-side deal with the topic of a big shaped man, the B-side starts off with Aitken chanting: "This is a sensation, all over the nation. Read all about it! Read all about it! Skinhead invasion! ". This explains why the song 'Apollo 12' is also known as 'Skinhead Invasion'. The song is carried by a heavy base line which makes the song suitable for some good moonstomp dancing. By its skinhead references the song 'Apollo 12' Despite the cult status this is the first time since its release over fifty years ago that this single is being reissued in its original format. Exclusively for this reissue we have remastered both songs for vinyl to deliver the best possible sound quality. The single is pressed on recycled eco vinyl (!) And includes a heavy weight insert with liner notes. Format & package: 7 "single Year of release: 2020 (reissued from 1969) Tracks: A Benwood Dick B Apollo 12 (Skinhead Invasion)

Pluto Pluck - The Good Thing / I Want You Now 12" PBS TRS

    £16.99
TRS Records is proud to announce the long-awaited reissue of this undercover gemstone. “Anything other than gospel music was a sin,” Rudolph “Pluto Pluck” Richards said of his formative years on Hagley Park Road near Half Way Tree in Kingston, Jamaica. Despite his strict Christian upbringing, the wafts of music and smoke pouring in from neighbourhood dancehall parties were too great an allure. By the time he was a young man, his head was swirling with “girls, parties, fun stuff,” Richards recalled. Taking inspiration from times spent in the presence of local celebrity Bob Marley— who would often greet him with a “wah happen yout”. Richards crafted “The Good Thing” in 1981. Issued under the name Pluto Pluck on Wesley Wint’s Prospect Heights, Brooklyn-based PLD concern, “The Good Thing” is a dreamy and addictive reggae expression of romance and youthful discovery.

  • Rhythm & Sound - See Mi Ya LP Burial Mix

Rhythm & Sound - See Mi Ya LP Burial Mix

    £22.99
The LP version compiles the seven Burial Mix 7"s from BM-14 to BM-20. In the 90s, with projects and labels such as Basic Channel, Maurizio or Main Street Records, the Berlin based producer team Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald have decisively influenced the development of techno-house and electronic music worldwide. Furthermore Ernestus and von Oswald have released pioneering hybrids of reggae, dub and electronica under the name Rhythm & Sound since 1996. In the last few years an utterly original and independent definition of reggae music - stripped down, rootsy, hi-tech - has emerged from their activities. For their last album Rhythm & Sound w/ the artists Ernestus and von Oswald collaborated with legendary reggae vocalists, like Cornel Campbell, Jennifer Lara, Love Joy or The Chosen Brothers (aka Lloyd "Bullwackie" Barnes). This line is being pursued consequently with their new CD/LP release See Mi Yah. See Mi Yah is a classic one rhythm album, typical format and production approach in Reggae, featuring ten vocal versions and one instrumental of the See Mi Yah rhythm, that will have been pre-released as a series of seven 7-inch singles (additionally with 3 alternative instrumental versions) - strictly roots! After Paul St. Hilaire (formerly known as Tikiman) had lent his voice to quite a few Rhythm & Sound releases over the past years, the starting point for this project was to try and work also with his brother Ras Perez, their fellow Berlin based Dominicans Koki and Ras Donovan (also known from his collaboration with Mapstation), the Berlin based Jamaicans Freddy Mellow, Walda Gabriel, Bobbo Shanti, Lance Clarke as Rod Of Iron and Joseph Cotton aka Jah Walton as Jah Cotton as singers b/w DJs. With a toasting style heavily influenced by the legendary U-Roy, Cotton was a central figure in the jamaican DJ scene of the 70s and 80s. Alongside Ranking Joe and U-Brown he performed with the Blood & Fire Sound System a few years ago. On visit in Berlin, the great Sugar Minott and Willi Williams (famous for Studio 1 classic Armagideon Time) did their versions in the Rhythm & Sound studio. For each tune the rhythm is arranged and mixed differently. On the album the tracks are lined up in a way that allows the listener to enjoy See Mi Yah as one continuous program running for about 46 minutes. It's never a bore - and goes on in the listener's head, when voices, rhythm and sound will be long gone.

  • Rico - Jama Rico LP 2-Tone Records 40th Anniversary

Rico - Jama Rico LP 2-Tone Records 40th Anniversary

    £20.99
Rico started his career in the late 1950’s playing with the likes of Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken and Max Romeo as a session musician in addition to creating his own recordings. He moved to the UK in the early 60’s and continued performing live and playing as a session musician. He signed to Island Records in the 70’s, releasing his first solo albums. In 1979 Rico met Jerry Dammers and began playing with The Specials. He became an honorary member of the band and featured prominently on some of their most famous tracks, along with Dick Cuthell, which produced a distinctive sound. In 1980 he released his first album for the 2 Tone label, That Man is Forward. Jama Rico was the second album released on 2 Tone Records in 1982. This album felt like a celebration of Jamaican musicians - Jama Rico was an altogether different beast. This was a more resolute statement, more African in its rhythms and a hidden treasure within the 2 Tone label. This time the recording sessions were split between Joe Gibbs studio in Jamaica and sessions at London’s Town House Studios. The Jamaican sessions again were produced by Dick Cuthell and comprised of musician friends Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Headley Bennett, and Ansel Collins. The London sessions, produced by Dick and Jerry Dammers, featured Specials John Bradbury and Horace Panter, along with Tony Utah and Satch Dixon. This new remaster, originally released in May 1982, is a part of the ongoing 2 Tone ‘40th Anniversary’ releases. The package is a 3mm Spined Sleeve, 180gm Heavyweight Black Vinyl, printed inner and bellyband.

  • Soul Revivers feat. Earl Sixteen - Got To Live / Living Version 7" Acid Jazz

Soul Revivers feat. Earl Sixteen - Got To Live / Living Version 7" Acid Jazz

    £8.99
Got to Live is a vintage-style, roots reality song, featuring veteran reggae vocalist Earl 16. Earl started his recording career in 1975 as lead vocalist for the Flaming Phonics, a group he formed while still a schoolboy in Kingston, Jamaica. Earl went on to record for Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, Derrick Harriott, Joe Gibbs and Roy Cousins, before moving to the London in 1985. Here he worked with Mad Professor amongst others, but also stepped outside of reggae to work with Leftfield, who he still tours with. Soul Revivers' Nick Manasseh has recorded with Earl for thirty years now, while David Hill has known him for fifteen years – Sixteen being a regular crowd-pleasing guest at his long-running Rootikal dance in London. Got to Live features Adrian McKenzie on the drum kit, with Jonah Dan on repeater drum and Spry on percussion. Add a three-part horns section and Manasseh's artful live-desk-mixdown, and this majestic tune is guaranteed to drop heavy. The flip holds Living Version, a instrumental track that is less about the dubwise, but is built for MCs. Entering 2021, it’s a good time to be reminded that we’ve all got to live. ‘top gear new British reggae from Soul Revivers’ - David Rodigan, BBC Radio 1xtra
  • Steve Cropper - Fire It Up LP Provogue

Steve Cropper - Fire It Up LP Provogue

    £23.99
The term "Guitar Hero" is bandied about loosely these days. Seems like all you have to do is look good holding the thing and you qualify. But if you ask the actual guitar heroes - like Brian May, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton - who Their Guitar Heroes are, Steve Cropper is definitely on the shortlist. If all he had done were the records with Otis Redding that would be enough, but shortly thereafter he was leaving his fingerprints on records by Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Johnny Taylor, Albert King, and virtually anybody worthy who came within earshot of Memphis. He was a Guitarist's Guitarist, and a Songwriter's Songwriter. Fire It Up is Steve Cropper's first album of new Soul / R&B material in 10 years. The album was produced by Steve and Jon Tiven.

The Circle Of Confusion featuring Cornell Campbell ‎– Yesterday Was History / Dub 7" Rocafort

    £8.99
At the start of the year 2019, Rocafort Records treated us to its first roots reggae outing in the form of The Circle of Confusion featuring the legendary Studio 1 vocalist Cornel Campbell. Warm, feel-good, socially conscious, intergalactic dub. We hoped for more, and finally it's here. Although slightly more digital in production, "Yesterday was History" cannot claim to differ enormously from its predecessor. But hey, why mess with the formula when the results are pure and damn near perfect? The Circle of Confusion are a Swiss production duo: Seb.K (Shakedown productions) and Phil'eas (Black Diamond Sound).Recorded at Addis records in Geneva on the day of Mandela's passing, this track is another slice of dubby humanity-driven peace and love that buoyantly skips along aided by the sweetest scatting voice in reggae, (not showing any signs of its 73 years), and all the appropriate studio space-age sound effects, harmonics and vintage keys. Modern roots reggae at its best, where the dub version is as banging and cosmic as the A side.

Ska music writer Stephen Shafer was Moon Ska Records “director of propaganda” during the 1990s and played a significant, behind-the-scenes role in making the so-called American “Third Wave” of ska happen. With a foreword by Gaz Mayall (The Trojans, Gaz's Rockin' Records, Gaz's Rockin' Blues, and co-writer of The Bodysnatchers' "Ruder Than You"), "The Duff Guide to 2 Tone" draws from over 12 years of Shafer’s reviews from his Duff Guide to Ska blog—and this collection not only provides a critical overview of 2 Tone’s ever-growing body of work, it also documents the continuing and largely unwritten history of these bands, as well as 2 Tone’s lasting impact well into the 21st century.

  • The Specials - Ghost Town 12" 2-Tone 40th Anniversary Half Speed Master

The Specials - Ghost Town 12" 2-Tone 40th Anniversary Half Speed Master

    £13.99
THE SPECIALS are one of the defining bands of the late 70’s/early 80’s along with Jerry Dammers iconic label Two Tone Records. They combined Jamaican ska and Rocksteady mixed with the energy of punk and launched a whole Ska Revival which paved the way for fellow likeminded bands Madness, The Beat and The Selecter to release their first singles. Having had seven top 10 singles and two Gold albums over the course of two years, the band released Jerry Dammers’ Ghost Town in June 1981, backed by Lynval Goldings’ Why? and the Terry Hall penned Friday Night Saturday Morning. The beginnings of the song were written around the closure of the Larcano dancehall in Coventry, but also reflecting what was happening in other towns and cities with urban decay, unemployment and ongoing racial tensions of the period. Themes which are still relevant today. The single, which was recently voted the second greatest UK single of all time by Alexis Petridis in the Guardian, reached Number One in the UK singles charts and stayed there for a further 3 weeks, becoming one of the biggest selling singles of 1981 and has remained one of the classic UK singles of all. This 40th Anniversary Edition has been mastered and cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios using the original production tapes for optimum audio quality.

  • The Trojan Story 50th Anniversary Box set (3LP) Trojan Records

The Trojan Story 50th Anniversary Box set (3LP) Trojan Records

    £49.99
One of the most significant collections in Trojan’s immense catalogue, the ‘The Trojan Story’ album dramatically changed the perception of Jamaican music among the general British public outside of the country’s Afro-Caribbean population. Prior to its release in 1971 there had never been an attempt to present a comprehensive anthology of the island’s musical development, with vintage ska, rock steady and reggae widely regarded as obsolete and of precious little merit. The treble disc set, which became an instant best-seller, had been the brainchild of Trojan’s label manager and Black Music fan, Rob Bell, who, assisted by Trojan stalwarts, Dandy, Webster Shrowder and Joe Sinclair, produced arguably the most significant Jamaican music retrospectives of all time. Now, 50 years following its original release, this hugely influential album has been revisited by Bell, along with reggae musician, Rusty Zinn, who have succeeded in improving what was already an almost perfect collection. Presented in the original eye-catching artwork, the set is further enhanced by a highly illustrated 50-page booklet in which Bell relates the stories behind the release and the 50 tracks featured on the compilation.
