Born In A Car Crash - A Guide To Choice 1950s and 60s Rhythm and Blues 45s BOOK Long Road Society

    £30.00
“Born In A Car Crash” is a guide to 1950s and 60s rhythm and blues 45s - artifacts of an incredibly fertile period of black American music and a time of signifi cant cultural upheaval. R&B was a constant thread through the complex tapestry of racial segregation, international confl ict, and the civil rights movement. The universal appeal of 1950s and 60s R&B continues to bring disparate groups of society together during incredibly divisive political times. “Born In A Car Crash” highlights essential tracks from an era of profound creativity, entrepreneurship, and inspiration. It aims to shine a light on the musicians, producers, and labels that leveraged everything they had to create music for the people.

  • Cornell Campbell - Time For Peace 12" Jancro

Cornell Campbell - Time For Peace 12" Jancro

    £13.99

Legendary Reggae vocalist Cornell Campbell is to release a new E.P entitled ‘Time For Peace’, to mark the 52nd Anniversary of Martin Luthur King Jr’s assassination, 4th April 2021(Digital release! Vinyl released 9/9/21).

Taking its title from Cornell’s lyrical addition to Black Man In A White World, “I want you to understand, I need, I need everyone to hang on, in love, peace and unity”, the new 12” EP features bold interpretations of two of soul music's most iconic songs about race, identity and injustice.

Both Michael Kiwanuka’s ‘Black Man In A White World’ and ‘Outernational Blues’ - a take on the Marvin Gaye classic ‘Inner City Blues’ - evoke the sentiment and spirit of MLK’s peaceful protest, and act as a reminder as to the importance of grace, pride and dignity in difficult times. Capturing a unique combination of vocal vulnerability and wisdom, this is music that demands deep listening. Cornell Campbell’s voice at 75, carries a new found poignancy and depth of emotion; one which feels perfectly suited to delivering an elders perspective on such emotionally loaded topics.

The E.P was recorded and produced over four countries, with the music for all tracks having been recorded in London, England at The Total Refreshment Centre, before being voiced in Kingston Jamaica at Anchor Studios. Additional backing vocals were added at Heritage Recording Co in Burbank, California, before the track was finally mixed and produced by Sergio Lopez, in Andalucia, Spain.

‘Time For Peace’ is the first in a series of four releases from icons of reggae, including ‘Time For Love’ by Tabby Diamond, of The Mighty Diamonds, ‘Time For Change’ by Fred Locks and ‘Time For Unity’ by Big Youth; all to be released on limited 12” vinyl.

Originally released by Trojan Records in 1969, Duke Reid Golden Hits highlights a dozen of the legendary Jamaican producers biggest hits of the rock steady era.

Although all of the tracks were already oldies by the time the LP saw issue, such was their timeless appeal that the collection became an instant best-seller.

Almost half a century on, the recordings are still widely considered classics of the rock steady sound, yet despite the significance of the collection, this seminal album has remained out of print for decades.

  • F.S. Blumm & Nils Frahm - 2X1=4 (2LP) Leiter

    F.S. Blumm & Nils Frahm - 2X1=4 (2LP) Leiter

    £20.00
F.S.Blumm and Nils Frahm return with their fourth collaborative album: ‘2X1=4’ finds the duo unexpectedly exploring a dub-influenced universe, though in truth it’s one already familiar to both. F.S.Blumm, for instance, is co-founder of Quasi Dub Development, whose 2014 album, ‘Little-Twister vs Stiff-Neck’, featured Lady Ann and Lee Scratch Perry, while Frahm’s music – not least 2018’s ‘All Melody’ – has occasionally betrayed a fondness for the form’s associated studio techniques, though he concedes wryly that his approach has always been “a little bit more German” than his influences. F.S.Blumm, a revered mainstay of the German underground for over two decades, and Nils Frahm first met in the early 2000s. Frahm was a big fan of Blumm’s 2001 album, ‘Mondkuchen’– he refers to his fellow Berlin resident admiringly these days as “a vital brick in the Berlin Wall” – while Blumm was soon dazzled by Frahm’s studio set up. “Compared to mine,” he says, “it was like a space ship!” Soon they were working together on a variety of projects – including theatre pieces and animated films – and by 2010 they’d released their first collaborative album, ‘Music For Lovers Music Versus Time’. A second, ‘Music For Wobbling Music Versus Gravity’, followed in 2013, and a third, ‘Tag Eins Tag Zwei’, in 2016. ‘2X1=4’ is very different to its predecessors, but its final track, ‘Neckrub’, first took shape as they wound up work on ‘Tag Eins Tag Zwei’. “We had a certain sound in the back of our heads,” Blumm recalls, “which was influenced by these 80s rhythm machines, and we suddenly discovered a common love for dub.” Most of the album, therefore, was initially developed in 2016 during improvisation sessions recorded by Frahm to two-track cassette. “It was like we were running a combine harvester,” Blumm laughs, “so we could write our names on a single grain!” Afterwards, they worked on editing and overdubs in Frahm’s new studio at Berlin’s legendary Funkhaus. “We kept on making new songs out of these sessions and starting over and over again,” Frahm smiles. “It was a process that was time consuming but really fun.” Not that either of them is eager to claim a purist approach. “I love ending up somewhere where I’m surprised by myself or the machine or the person with whom I’m making music,” Blumm concludes, while Frahm emphasizes that, “None of this is too serious. The record is only as much of a dub record as the ones before are jazz records…”

Lorna Nelson - Deh Pon De Low 7" Ralph Holness TRS

    £10.99
A collaborative effort released on Ralph Holness' imprint back in 1984, TRS is pleased to announce the reissue of this proto-digi gem "Deh Pon De Low". Written by one of JA's finest, unrecognised songwriting talents, Carl 'Jackie' Estick and co-produced/arranged by Errol O'Meally. To top it off and seal the deal, this cherry is sung over by songstress Lorna Nelson. In the raw and unfiltered words of O'Meally, "Jamaicans will recognise that name (Ralph Holness) as the king of so-called 'Roots' Theatre for a number of years, based at The Ward Theatre in the heart of Parade, Downtown Kingston. Ralph was a real character and after dominating the theatre business producing broad raucous comedies that appealed to the masses and made him a fortune, he decided to make a foray into the real pool of sharks, music producing. Needless to say, I doubt if any of us, apart from whichever studio we used, got any money from Ralph, for our endeavours and it has been submerged in the rest of the morass of dues-paying that any young, starving striver in the business was doomed to go through in those days. Still, the tune doesn't sound too dusty". Ralph Holness had a passion for his work. If you didn't know him, you would think he was aggressive, but it was really a desire to make a production come together in the right way. When him talk is like thunder roll. Everybody talking bout "money-money" and everybody soon get maddy-maddy. Things nowadays get slacky-slacky and some a them a run from decency. Me say Lord woy, everything deh pon de low.

Earl started his recording career in 1975 as lead vocalist for the Flaming Phonics, a group he formed while still a schoolboy in Kingston, Jamaica. Earl went on to record for Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, Derrick Harriott, Joe Gibbs and Roy Cousins, before moving to the London in 1985. Here he worked with Mad Professor amongst others, but also stepped outside of reggae to work with Leftfield, who he still tours with. Soul Revivers' Nick Manasseh has recorded with Earl for thirty years now, while David Hill has known him for fifteen years – Sixteen being a regular crowd-pleasing guest at his long-running Rootikal dance in London. Got to Live features Adrian McKenzie on the drum kit, with Jonah Dan on repeater drum and Spry on percussion. Add a three-part horns section and Manasseh's artful live-desk-mixdown, and this majestic tune is guaranteed to drop heavy. The flip holds Living Version, a instrumental track that is less about the dubwise, but is built for MCs. Entering 2021, it’s a good time to be reminded that we’ve all got to live. ‘top gear new British reggae from Soul Revivers’ - David Rodigan, BBC Radio 1xtra

Steve Cropper - Fire It Up LP Provogue

    £23.99
The term "Guitar Hero" is bandied about loosely these days. Seems like all you have to do is look good holding the thing and you qualify. But if you ask the actual guitar heroes - like Brian May, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton - who Their Guitar Heroes are, Steve Cropper is definitely on the shortlist. If all he had done were the records with Otis Redding that would be enough, but shortly thereafter he was leaving his fingerprints on records by Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Johnny Taylor, Albert King, and virtually anybody worthy who came within earshot of Memphis. He was a Guitarist's Guitarist, and a Songwriter's Songwriter. Fire It Up is Steve Cropper's first album of new Soul / R&B material in 10 years. The album was produced by Steve and Jon Tiven.

Telly* loved the idea and Nazamba voiced the track from his studio in Jamaïca the day after. The Dubquake Studio is where the track really took shape, Rico couldn’t help but add his enticing signature O.B.F flute. With the vocal version on side A, flip the record for the “Dub Me Right” mix and let loose! Vocals by Nazamba & Telly Produced by Telly, flute by Wata Flava Mixed by Rico O.B.F at the Dubquake Studio Mastered by Fede @ Loud & Clear Artwork by Biga*Ranx / Telly

  • The Duff Guide To 2 Tone - Stephen Shafer

The Duff Guide To 2 Tone - Stephen Shafer

    £11.49
"The Duff Guide to 2 Tone" features over 70 reviews of reissues of essential 2 Tone albums from The Specials & The Special AKA, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness, The Bodysnatchers, and Bad Manners, as well as write-ups of their more recent records, gigs, books, and movies—which no self-respecting fan of 2 Tone should miss! (This guide also features reviews of 2 Tone-adjacent releases that you need to know about.) Ska music writer Stephen Shafer was Moon Ska Records “director of propaganda” during the 1990s and played a significant, behind-the-scenes role in making the so-called American “Third Wave” of ska happen. With a foreword by Gaz Mayall (The Trojans, Gaz's Rockin' Records, Gaz's Rockin' Blues, and co-writer of The Bodysnatchers' "Ruder Than You"), "The Duff Guide to 2 Tone" draws from over 12 years of Shafer’s reviews from his Duff Guide to Ska blog—and this collection not only provides a critical overview of 2 Tone’s ever-growing body of work, it also documents the continuing and largely unwritten history of these bands, as well as 2 Tone’s lasting impact well into the 21st century.

The Specials - Ghost Town 7" 40th Anniversary Half Speed Master

    £10.99
THE SPECIALS are one of the defining bands of the late 70’s/early 80’s along with Jerry Dammers iconic label Two Tone Records. They combined Jamaican ska and Rocksteady mixed with the energy of punk and launched a whole Ska Revival which paved the way for fellow likeminded bands Madness, The Beat and The Selecter to release their first singles. Having had seven top 10 singles and two Gold albums over the course of two years, the band released Jerry Dammers’ Ghost Town in June 1981, backed by Lynval Goldings’ Why? and the Terry Hall penned Friday Night Saturday Morning. The beginnings of the song were written around the closure of the Larcano dancehall in Coventry, but also reflecting what was happening in other towns and cities with urban decay, unemployment and ongoing racial tensions of the period. Themes which are still relevant today. The single, which was recently voted the second greatest UK single of all time by Alexis Petridis in the Guardian, reached Number One in the UK singles charts and stayed there for a further 3 weeks, becoming one of the biggest selling singles of 1981 and has remained one of the classic UK singles of all. This 40th Anniversary Edition has been mastered and cut at half-speed by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios using the original production tapes for optimum audio quality.

  • The Trojan Story 50th Anniversary Box set (3LP) Trojan Records

The Trojan Story 50th Anniversary Box set (3LP) Trojan Records

    £49.99
One of the most significant collections in Trojan’s immense catalogue, the ‘The Trojan Story’ album dramatically changed the perception of Jamaican music among the general British public outside of the country’s Afro-Caribbean population. Prior to its release in 1971 there had never been an attempt to present a comprehensive anthology of the island’s musical development, with vintage ska, rock steady and reggae widely regarded as obsolete and of precious little merit. The treble disc set, which became an instant best-seller, had been the brainchild of Trojan’s label manager and Black Music fan, Rob Bell, who, assisted by Trojan stalwarts, Dandy, Webster Shrowder and Joe Sinclair, produced arguably the most significant Jamaican music retrospectives of all time. Now, 50 years following its original release, this hugely influential album has been revisited by Bell, along with reggae musician, Rusty Zinn, who have succeeded in improving what was already an almost perfect collection. Presented in the original eye-catching artwork, the set is further enhanced by a highly illustrated 50-page booklet in which Bell relates the stories behind the release and the 50 tracks featured on the compilation.

Final full length album by the reggae star. The album was originally set to come out in 2020 with plans for a worldwide tour in support, but unfortunately, the pandemic delayed the release. Now, with the heartbreaking loss of U-Roy on February 17th, the album has become a celebration of one of the most profoundly influential reggae stars of his generation. An originator of the chatty rhythmic vocal style known as toasting - a key foundational element in the development of rap in its nascent stages in the 1970's. U-Roy left behind an unmatched legacy which is clearly on display on 'Solid Gold', with its guest appearances including Ziggy Marley, Shaggy, Mick Jones of The Clash, Santigold, Sly & Robbie, David Hinds of Steel Pulse and more.

  • Witness - Mercy Gone / Witness ft Mr Williamz - Mercy Gone Part 2 7" Fruits Records

Witness - Mercy Gone / Witness ft Mr Williamz - Mercy Gone Part 2 7" Fruits Records

    £8.99
Probably one of the most sought-after Jamaican roots reggae tracks by record collectors, 'MERCY GONE' is both an obscure and iconic sound system tune. Originally performed by the equally obscure 1NY and Soul Syndicate, 'Mercy Gone' captures the essence of 70s roots reggae: a slow tempo with a bouncing uptempo skank, inventive drumming and a compelling bass line, a raw but powerful sound, and a plaintive voice whose emotion reflects the harsh reality of the sufferer's life. The 18th Parallel wanted to offer their own version of this classic, an original record that is now unavailable and estimated to be worth thousands of dollars. To do so, the producers found a young singer of only twenty years old with undeniable talent, but still unknown to the public: Witness. Originally from Swaziland, Philisiwe ‘Witness’ Lukhele delivers her own interpretation of ‘Mercy Gone’ on an original riddim by The 18th Parallel. Without trying to identically reproduce the original, Witness and The 18th Parallel offer a powerful and modernised recut that still is faithful to the aesthetics of the Jamaican sound of the 70s. Above all, they finally give sound systems the opportunity to play this anthem, which was previously inaccessible on a 7" single. The icing on the cake on the B-side: one of the most prominent DJs on the current British sound system scene, Mr. Williamz, takes over and mash up the dance! Rewind!
