To celebrate 40 year of Midnight Rock, Jah Thomas went back into his tape archive to unearth another 10 tracks, either with original vocals or guest names brought in.

From 2015 to 2020, David Hill (Rootikal) has been mixing, editing and selecting the best of Jah Thomas’ Midnight Rocklabel for a series of 7s and 10s on the Rootikal label.

With The Return of Pachyman, García shows how the Caribbean flow is transnational, a vibe that resounds from Jamaica to San Juan to Southern California. “With this project, I was looking to make positive music and radiate good energy; something to kinda disconnect from the negative things that were happening at the moment,” Garcia explains. “I am trying to make this project a service for humanity in the sense that I just wanted to shine a positive light.”

Speng Bond, a Brummie MC, active with sounds like Jungleman, Quaker City, Turbotronic, King Earthquake and Now Generation, ever since the nineteen seventies. In 2011 Speng already collaborated with Kemist a first time, resulting in ‘Cut Back’, which also appears in the track list of ‘Up Deh’. The tune revived Speng’s recording career and collaborations with Jahtari, Naram/Red Robin, Monkey Marc, Creation Music and Strictly Sound Prodz followed. For ‘Up Deh’, the veteran MC’s long player debut, Kris Kemist selected 14 of Speng Bond’s best tracks of recent years.

Widely credited with popularizing the melodica in reggae, Pablo was a talented musician and an innovative producer who became an early dub pioneer. Now regarded as classics, his 1970s recordings were part of the remarkable creative surge that vaulted the Jamaican music scene to international prominence. Much of this material was released by Rockers, a record label founded by Pablo and named after his popular Kingston sound system. Now, Nature Sounds is unveiling Roots, Rockers, & Dub, a new Augustus Pablo collection celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rockers.

Featuring classic dubs along with rare and out-of-print tracks, the album highlights a wealth of Rockers material spanning Pablo's entire career, and includes new liner notes co-written by his son Addis Pablo. Madlib Invazion Library Series Entry #4: Dan Ubick (Night Owls, Connie Price & The Keystones, The Lions) explores the realms of Dramatic Soul.

Featuring two tracks taken from the EPs that marked the inauguration of the band Ghost Funk Orchestra, their new 45 highlights two heavy hitters. The A-Side track, 'Brownout,' is the song that officially kicked off Ghost Funk Orchestra as a recording project. Along with 'Boneyard Baile' on the B-side, these two songs have been staples of GFO’s live and recorded presence since the very beginning. Adriana Muniz provides stellar vocals for both tracks.  

Back in 2016, producer Seth Applebaum released two EPs that marked the inauguration of the band Ghost Funk Orchestra. ‘Night Walker’ and ‘Death Waltz’ were conceived as one-man-band, reel-to-reel tape recorded experiments that would bring together elements of all the sounds that Seth most adored at the time: tape-saturated drums, gratuitous spring reverb, surfy guitar, Latin-style percussion, odd time signatures, and Spanish-language female vocals. Initially released only in the digital domain and on a short run of cassette tapes, these two EPs that defined the early era of GFO are now finally available together on a single LP via Colemine Records. The tracks have been lovingly remastered by Doug Krebs. We invite you to take a dive into the humble beginnings of a project that has continued to grow, shape shift, and accrue new and exciting sounds for its sonic palette.

More fire from Manchester's Dub Smugglers as they string up their sound with the one and only Horseman. De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric, jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tongue Massive started with the Jungle Brothers. 

Hostile Environment is the first album in over forty years from the legendary Creation Rebel, who were the original On-U Sound house band and responsible for classics such as Dub from Creation and Starship Africa. While conceptualizing Switched-On, Pachyman gravitated to Lovers Rock-era reggae and the iconic Studio One. Yet the album also pays homage to the era where musicians began manipulating synthesizers for gloriously off-kilter bleeps and bloops. His evolution emerges on You Looked at Me, fusing a Krautrock-esque beat with synths reminiscent of Boards of Canada. Pachy's sound further expands on Trago Coqueto, a cheeky love song crooned through a cocktail’s prism and an ode to his Puerto Rican roots.

Thundercat links with Tame Impala for a brand new single, “No More Lies,” out now on Brainfeeder. This is the first new Thundercat song in over three years. The single arrives ahead of a huge string of tour dates for Thunder, who will perform with acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Strokes, before taking his show to Australia, Asia, and Europe later in the year.

A musical match made in heaven, the duo of Bruner and Parker is an electrifying union. With “No More Lies,” the pair hits the sweet spot between their two individual, complementary styles with laser accuracy. Their melodic synchronicity belies this love lament, with Thundercat musing on a doomed relationship for which he takes responsibility: “But it’s not your fault, I’m just kind of ass”. The song culminates in a candid monologue from the bassist questioning the sense of honesty being the best policy in relationships: “I tell you the truth because I care, but I also lie to you because I care.”
