  • Hollie Cook - Happy Hour In Dub (Vinyl LP / CD) Merge Records (PRE-ORDER)

Hollie Cook - Happy Hour In Dub (Vinyl LP / CD) Merge Records (PRE-ORDER)

    £22.99
On August 11, 2023, Merge Records will release Happy Hour in Dub, a heavenly set of dub versions to pair with Hollie Cook’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Happy Hour. Her first full dub record since 2012, Happy Hour in Dub was coaxed into being by close listening of the original album’s modern lover’s rock.
Cook and Mckone explain:“The reason and inspiration for wanting to make the dub record is because Happy Hour, in its original form, has so many intricate musical details running throughout the songs from the backing vocal and string arrangements to some far more subtle details. And during the mixing process, hearing some of these parts on their own over the drum and bass foundation, we felt there was so much left to explore and expose in the songs and take them to outer space.”
At the controls rejoining Hollie in exploring the space is Happy Hour producer Ben Mckone, who takes her soulful creations and stretches them to their sonic limits, with new vocal features by Josh Skints and Kiko Bun.

The Viceroys - Maga Down | Yakka - Maga Dub 7" Poor Man's Friend Records

    £11.99

Drawing musical influences from Ethiopian and Cuban music as well as its obvious early reggae basis this record sounds fresh whilst simultaneously transporting you back to the golden era with its warm nostalgic themes.
The flip side is an ethereal dub mix from the Bristol based Yakka, an almost psychedelic journey into the mixing board bringing out the best of the vintage sound pallet.
This is the third release from us at Poor Man's Friend Records, produced in the Poor Man's Friend studio and voiced in Jamaica only 300 copies were pressed of this smoked out ode to the golden era.

  • Fela Kuti - Shakara (50th Anniversary Edition) Knitting Factory Records

Fela Kuti - Shakara (50th Anniversary Edition) Knitting Factory Records

    £25.99
Shakara is the 6th in the series of celebratory Fela 50th Anniversary reissues. Like its predecessors in the series, this version will be on color vinyl and the LP will be wrapped in a gold foil obi strip with a brief essay on the album and Fela's global impact on music. Like Fela's other early 70's releases, he used each side of his LPs to create a deep groove that pulls the listener in and follows with metaphoric lyrics that call out and critique the corrupt hangover of colonialism.
The album is the sound of Afrobeat's maturation as a global music. Fela's Pidgin English lyrics extend his music's audience beyond Yoruba speakers and make his words understandable across the Anglophone world. In "Lady," Fela highlights the adoption of European social habits to the detriment of African culture. "Shakara" is a mainly instrumental track, with a brief lyric, sung in Yoruba, warning against boasters and braggarts. The song pacing is festive and typically up tempo, with boisterous horn arrangements, with strong solos from Fela on keyboards and the fearsome Igo Chico on tenor saxophone.
This 50th anniversary edition is pressed on limited edition pink vinyl, with a gold foil obi strip, and is packaged with a yellow 7" featuring covers of "Lady" and "Shakara" by London band Ezra Collective.
  • Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight (50th Anniversary Edition) Knitting Factory Records

Fela Kuti - Roforofo Fight (50th Anniversary Edition) Knitting Factory Records

    £25.99
By 1972, when Music of Fela: Roforofo Fight was originally released (on two vinyl albums, Music of Fela Volume One and Volume Two), Fela was becoming one of the most avidly followed musicians in West Africa. His audience came from among the region's urban poor, the ""sufferheads"" living in the shanty towns around the major cities, along with growing numbers of students and political dissenters. Fela championed, and sang about the problems of, oppressed and exploited people and denounced the ruling elites lording it over them, with their seemingly endemic corruption and their ready use of violence to crush dissent. Because he generally sang in Broken English rather than Yoruba, and adopted an increasingly pan-Africanist outlook, his message resonated throughout Anglophone Africa.
The 50th-anniversary reissue of Roforofo Fight is pressed on double orange & green vinyl. Side D features singles "Shenshema" and "Ariya" on vinyl for the first time. The two tracks were originally released as a 7" single in 1972 and later featured in the CD reissue of "Roforofo Fight / The Fela Singles"".
  • Fela Kuti - Gentleman (50th Anniversary Edition) LP Knitting Factory Records

Fela Kuti - Gentleman (50th Anniversary Edition) LP Knitting Factory Records

    £23.99

50th Anniversary reissue. Like its predecessors in the series, this version will be available on exclusive colored vinyl (Igbo Smoke) and the LP will be wrapped in a gold foil obi strip with a brief essay on the album and Fela's global impact on music. Like Fela's other early 70's releases, he used each side of his LPs to create a deep groove that pulls the listener in and follows with metaphoric lyrics that call out and critique the corrupt hangover of colonialism.

Gentleman is the last of Fela's early 1970s albums recorded with the Africa 70. The title track can be interpreted literally or as a metaphor concerning a wider issue. Fela deftly addresses the colonialism-induced, inferiority complex which led many in Africa's new governing elites to reject African style, concepts of beauty, and modes of behavior in favor of European imports. Gentleman's other tracks, ""Fefe Naa Efe"" and ""Igbe,” have more direct, less metaphorical lyrics. On ""Fefe Naa Efe,” an Ashanti motto from Ghana, Fela tells a woman dumped by her boyfriend that she must get over the heartache and move on. On ""Igbe”, Fela declares that anyone who betrays a friend is shit, and that anybody who lacks self-respect is shit - something you want to expel from your body as soon as possible. He sings the word ""shit"" in several Nigerian languages, so there is no misunderstanding.
  • Marcia Griffiths - Essential Artist Collection (Gatefold 2LP/2CD) Trojan Records

Marcia Griffiths - Essential Artist Collection (Gatefold 2LP/2CD) Trojan Records

    £28.99
Arguably the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Marcia Griffiths first made her mark the Jamaican music scene with a number of popular singles during the late Sixties, before finding international fame in 1970 alongside her long-term friend and sometime collaborator, Bob Andy.
Bob and Marcia’s uplifting reggae version of Nina Simone’s inspiring song, ‘(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black’ hit number 5 in the UK pop chart, with the single proving to be the first of two British chartbusters, with their exuberant interpretation of Pied Piper’ just missing out on a Top 10 placing the following year.
Soon after, Marcia became a member of Bob Marley’s famed backing group, the I-Threes, while also continuing to enjoy solo success with numerous Jamaican hits for a variety of record producers throughout the remainder of the Seventies and well beyond.
And it is the very best of her solo work that features on this ‘Essential Artist’ compilation, the latest release in Trojan Records’ newly launched range that showcases the work of Jamaica’s best-loved ‘foundation’ artists.
Available as a 28-track double vinyl LP and a comprehensive 2CD compilation, the collection expertly demonstrates just why Marcia Griffiths is today widely regarded as a Jamaican legend.

  • Fred Locks - The Missing Link CD VP Records

Fred Locks - The Missing Link CD VP Records

    £12.99

The story behind this album--released in 2000 but recorded in 1978--is nearly Biblical: a tale of optimism, lost hope, and finally redemption that's fitting for its roots reggae/Rasta consciousness theme. In 1976, Vulcan released Fred Locks's debut set, "Black Star Liners." The album became a reggae classic, its title tune--a Garveyite view of repatriation--an anthem. With producer Hugh "Jah Shoes" Boothe, Locks recorded a follow-up set in '78. But Vulcan folded, and neither Boothe nor Locks had the cash to release the album, which was then abandoned. Over the next 20 years an original tape was lost, others damaged. Then, years later, the missing cassette surfaced, and the tapes were restored.

The line-up of musicians is stellar, including Jahlovemuzik's celebrated Albert Malawi on drums and Pablove Black on keyboards and backup vocals, and "Rastafari Rule" and "The Only One" (and its dub) are standouts on this fine album and piece of reggae history.

After fronting popular Jamaican vocal trio the Paragons on a succession of best-selling rock steady singles during the late Sixties, John Holt went on to become one of Jamaica’s most popular solo performers, scoring a series of reggae hits for many of the island’s leading record producers.

His international breakthrough came in 1974 with the hugely popular ‘1000 Volts of Holt’ album, which fused raw reggae rhythms with sophisticated orchestral arrangements.

The highlight of the long-player was a reworking of Kris Kristoffersson’s country hit, ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’, which the following year became a global hit, with the single, peaking at Number 6 in the UK charts. Over the years that followed, Holt remained a giant of the reggae scene with further best sellers and numerous sell-out shows around the world.

The very best of his solo work has been brought together on this ‘Essential Artist’ compilation, the latest release in Trojan Records’ newly launched range that showcases the work of Jamaica’s best-loved ‘foundation’ artists.

Available as a 28-track double vinyl LP and a comprehensive 2CD compilation, the collection superbly illustrates the talent that made John Holt one of the reggae music’s most popular and enduring singers.

Night Owls - I Only Have Eyes For You (feat. Chris Dowd & Tippa Lee) 7" F-Spot Records

    £12.99

    (United States Import 45)

Raising the bar yet again, Night Owls' first single of 2023 lays yet another set of classic soul songs on you, flipped into the band's signature style. On Side A we find The Flamingo's beloved Doo-Wop/soul hit from 1959, "I Only Have Eyes For You," re-imagined to wind your waistline with Night Owls' longtime friend and collaborator - the one-and-only Chris Dowd from Los Angeles' legendary Fishbone on vocals. Known for tunes like "Pouring Rain" and "Everyday Sunshine" Dowd brings his signature soul drenched delivery with a hint of rude boy grit to match the rhythmic and tonal stylings of the group. Wanting to take things to the next level, producer Dan Ubick called in veteran underground Jamaican legend Tippa Lee (Stones Throw, Dub Club, Jammy's, Greensleeves, etc.) to sprinkle his magic rasta dust on top and deejay/toast on the track and the results are burning hot.

But wait, that's not all!! On Side B we find the beloved beat diggers classic "Live And Let Live," originally performed by Jimmy Jones in 1970 on Deke Records out of Chicago. For the Fender Rhodes-driven reggaefied version here, Night Owls roped in another longtime friend - Los Angeles kingpin and mover ’n' shaker, "Music Man" Miles Tackett to add his soulful vocals to the track and it's as buttery as cornbread from Cracker Barrel! Tackett is the mastermind behind globe-trotting funk/soul collective Breakestra (of which Night Owl Dan Ubick was a member) and legendary weekly L.A. dance parties like Funky Sole, Root Down and The Breaks. This side also includes Destani Wolf, who many will remember was featured on Night Owls’ version of “Let’s Stay Together”, providing the beautiful ‘verbed out backing vocals.

Double Vinyl LP (2xLP) Back In Stock!

Produced in their now legendary Bandulu Studio, the 20 tracks of this new album are the result of a patient production process, carried out with care and passion. Throughout the album, L'Entourloop testifies in its own way via a puzzle of film samples, of this strange period that we have just gone through collectively, using all its savoir faire when it comes to make the people dance.

Since 1964, when the song "My Boy Lollipop" flooded the European radio airwaves, L'Entourloop’s love for reggae and its culture has never stopped growing. With this third album, they wanted to pay tribute to the legendary pioneers of this incredible movement – artists and producers such as Tom Wong, Count Machuki, Prince Buster and Lee "Scratch" Perry. An album which is a true declaration of love for soundsystem culture and its children - reggae, dancehall and hip-hop.

Fellow French artists are also in the spotlight with guests such as Big Red, O.B.F and Manudigital. To complete this amazing cast, L'Entourloop has once again called on the incomparable Troy Berkley from Bermuda and the talented trumpeter N'Zeng, formerly of Le Peuple de l'Herbe, to accompany the collective on the road alongwith a new addition - excellent Dutch rapper BlabberMouf, who has just joined the killer new live show.

  • Burial - Antidawn EP 12" Vinyl Hyperdub

Burial - Antidawn EP 12" Vinyl Hyperdub

    £16.99
Antidawn reduces Burial’s music to just the vapours.
The record explores an interzone between dislocated, patchwork songwriting and eerie, open-world, game space ambience.
In the resulting no man's land, lyrics take precedence over song, lonely phrases colour the haze, a stark and fragmented structure makes time slow down.
Antidawn seems to tell a story of a wintertime city, and something beckoning you to follow it into the night. The result is both comforting and disturbing, producing a quiet and uncanny glow against the cold. Sometimes, as it enters 'a bad place', it takes your breath away. And time just stops.
  • Burial - Claustro / State Forest EP 12" Vinyl Hyperdub

Burial - Claustro / State Forest EP 12" Vinyl Hyperdub

    £9.99
In a 2007 interview with The Wire, Burial revealed that "Archangel," arguably his best-known track, was inspired by the death of his dog. As part of the Burial mythology, the detail feels almost quaint, even darkly comic. Burial, after all, is an artist credited with soundtracking the melancholy of not just his London hometown, but that of an entire disassociated generation. On Claustro / State Forest, he moves further away from the eerie sadness of "Archangel" while returning to the UK garage shuffle that drove it forwards. Here, the South Londoner explores a set of emotions that are trickier to decipher, but no less satisfying.
Arriving two years after his last solo record, "Claustro" is a banger. But that description masks how weird it actually is. Burial deploys a high-tempo 2-step beat and looping R&B refrain (Googling the lyrics provided no answers as to the sample). Such parts should be recognisable to anyone familiar with the first two Burial albums, but then an ungainly synth melody begins. The hi-hats become more furious, the beat stretching and struggling to keep up until what feels like the point of collapse. The track is tense for most of its five minutes, until it ends on an emotional curveball of goofy chipmunk vocals and a cornball, mid-'90s trance melody. This coda recalls the tongue-in-cheek sentimentalism of "Hiders," albeit lodged firmly in the hardcore continuum.
"State Forest" picks up where the gloomy ambient textures of "Subtemple / Beachfires" left off. A mournful tone rings across a foggy atmosphere of echoey clicks, distant field recordings and layered, reverb-drenched synths. For all the video game samples Burial has used over his 15-year career (most famously from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty), "State Forest" is perhaps the closest he's come to realising a plausible video game soundscape. There are small details buried in the mix—the flick of a Zippo lighter, the exhale of breath—which suggest a narrative. The end of the track slowly builds to a mini-crescendo, the vocals mixing with what sound like wind chimes and other delicate frequencies. It feels like Burial's usual London-centric outlook has been swapped for something harder to place.
Claustro / State Forest twists familiar aspects of Burial's output—slippery, R&B-inflected rhythms and impressionistic mood pieces—into subtly augmented shapes. It lacks the cohesion of some of his most successful post-Untrue releases (Rival Dealer, Truant), but once the vinyl crackle stops, we're left adrift, the echoes of Burial's soundworld ringing throughout our own.
  • Soul Jazz Records presents ‘Studio One Space-Age Dub Special’ 2LP/CD Soul Jazz Studio One

Soul Jazz Records presents ‘Studio One Space-Age Dub Special’ 2LP/CD Soul Jazz Studio One

    £26.99
    • ‘Studio One Space-Age Dub Special’ is a brand new Studio One release on Soul Jazz Records which draws on more rare and classic dubs taken from the mighty vaults of Studio One Records.
    • Most of these tracks are taken from Studio One’s superb long out-of-print series of dub albums released between 1974 and 1980, such as ‘Zodiac Sounds’, ‘Ital Sounds and System’, ‘Roots Dub’, ‘Dub Store Special’, ‘Juks Incorporation’ and others. Many of these classic dub albums were originally released only in Jamaica in shortrun pressings with special silk-screen printed sleeves, all with striking minimal designs, and which now fetch many, many hundreds of pounds.
    • These tracks, credited to the Dub Specialist, use the original music tracks to seminal Studio One rhythms, which are broken down, reconstructed, and manipulated using the studio mixing desk as an instrument. With these albums, producer Clement Dodd and engineer Sylvan Morris helped create some of the finest dubs ever known.
    • The cover shows Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd in orbit, an image inspired by DJ Lone Ranger‘s 1982 ‘Badda Dan Dem’ album for Studio One, the cover of which portrays Sir Coxsone at the controls of a spaceship with the DJ in space.
    • The tracks on ‘Studio One Space-Age Dub Special’ are mainly instrumental cuts with occasional snippets of original vocals brought into the mix. Lone Ranger’s complete vocals feature on ‘A Lie Gal A Tell’, a superb six minutes plus dubbed out piece of musical madness. Also included are a selection of rare dub versions that only ever appeared on rare singles.
  • Danny T & Tradesman - Lazer Quest EP 12" Vinyl | Nice Up! Records

Danny T & Tradesman - Lazer Quest EP 12" Vinyl | Nice Up! Records

    £12.99
Taken from the recent "New Patterns" compilation on NICE UP!, "Lazer Quest" got such a reaction from DJs that we thought it only right to give it a full release of its own. Known previously for their dancehall & dub productions on labels such as Mungo's Hifi's Scotch Bonnet and Reggae Roast, the Leeds powerhouse duo of Danny T & Tradesman can also turn their hand to deep and devastating dubstep, harking back to their formative years in front of the speakers at Sub Dub.
"Lazer Quest" has already blown dances apart with its cavernous dub stylings and vintage wobble bass. On the flip we have 2 brand new tracks of equal weight and ferocity - firstly the snarky "Nobody Cares" featuring a ranting voicenote from their friend and collaborator Jakey Banton, again adding some vintage era wonkiness and sounding like a long lost Coki tune. Taking things even deeper, "Acid Wash" strips things back to an almost skeletal frame with echoes Eski style synths - one for the late night /early morning crew.
