Visionary artist Augustus Pablo is among the most important figures in reggae history. Widely credited with popularizing the melodica in reggae, Pablo was a talented musician and an innovative producer who became an early dub pioneer. Much of this material was released by Rockers, a record label founded by Pablo and named after his popular Kingston sound system. Now, Nature Sounds is unveiling Roots, Rockers, & Dub, a new Augustus Pablo collection celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rockers.

  • Ghost Funk Orchestra - Night Walker / Death Waltz LP Karma Chief Records

Ghost Funk Orchestra - Night Walker / Death Waltz LP Karma Chief Records

    £28.99
Back in 2016, producer Seth Applebaum released two EPs that marked the inauguration of the band Ghost Funk Orchestra. ‘Night Walker’ and ‘Death Waltz’ were conceived as one-man-band, reel-to-reel tape recorded experiments that would bring together elements of all the sounds that Seth most adored at the time: tape-saturated drums, gratuitous spring reverb, surfy guitar, Latin-style percussion, odd time signatures, and Spanish-language female vocals. Initially released only in the digital domain and on a short run of cassette tapes, these two EPs that defined the early era of GFO are now finally available together on a single LP via Colemine Records. The tracks have been lovingly remastered by Doug Krebs. We invite you to take a dive into the humble beginnings of a project that has continued to grow, shape shift, and accrue new and exciting sounds for its sonic palette.
  • Ghost Funk Orchestra - An Ode To Escapism LP Karma Chief Records

Ghost Funk Orchestra - An Ode To Escapism LP Karma Chief Records

    £25.99
Where will you hide when the world around you is closing in? On their latest LP, GFO invites you to close your eyes and take a dive into your subconscious. Strings and horns float around from ear to ear while their three sirens explore themes of isolation, fear of the unknown, and the fabrication of self-image. It’s a soulful psychedelic journey that picks up sonically where “A Song For Paul” left off. The drums are heavier, the arrangements are more intricate, and the vocal harmonies soar over a bed of odd time signature grooves. This is an album that’s meant to be listened to in the dark. So won’t you join them? You’re not scared.....are you?

De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric, jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tongue Massive started with the Jungle Brothers.

  • Pachyman - Switched-On LP ATO Records

Pachyman - Switched-On LP ATO Records

    £23.99
While conceptualizing Switched-On, Pachyman gravitated to Lovers Rock-era reggae and the iconic Studio One. His evolution emerges on You Looked at Me, fusing a Krautrock-esque beat with synths reminiscent of Boards of Canada. Pachy's sound further expands on Trago Coqueto, a cheeky love song crooned through a cocktail’s prism and an ode to his Puerto Rican roots.

With “No More Lies,” the pair hits the sweet spot between their two individual, complementary styles with laser accuracy. Their melodic synchronicity belies this love lament, with Thundercat musing on a doomed relationship for which he takes responsibility: “But it’s not your fault, I’m just kind of ass”. • Black Market Brass - Hox (BlackLP/Green LP/CD) Colemine Records

Black Market Brass - Hox (BlackLP/Green LP/CD) Colemine Records

    £25.99
The third LP from Black Market Brass is a new take on afrobeat that combines traditional grooves with heavy, hypnotic, sci-fi sounds that reflect the band’s myriad of influences as record collectors across genres. “We didn’t leave the traditional afro-beat sound behind, but we did allow ourselves to pull from different places with less hesitation,” shared saxophonist Cole Pulice.
Like their previous albums, the 9-piece band recorded Hox live to tape. “The sound and aesthetic of the analog recording process is important for this kind of music,” Pulice explained. “We’re looking to capture lightning in a bottle.” With that, the album features several sections of heavily processed synthesizers, harsh glitches, fuzzed out guitars, and a burning percussion section that pays homage to the traditional drumming cultures of Nigeria and Ghana. The performances are dynamic and confident. The grooves are infectious and hypnotic. BMB has pushed further into musical experimentalism, but at the end of the day, they’re still making dance music.
Krautrock, free-jazz, doom metal – the inspirations for Hox stem from all kinds of musical backgrounds, but the sound is far from scattered. It’s a polished, innovative record that’s sure to exceed expectations and keep the listener engaged from start to finish.

Icho Candy Ft. The Viceroys - Pave The Way / Yakka - Pave The Dub 7" Poor Man's Friend Records

    £11.99
The A side of this latest seven inch gives us the classic writing style of Icho Candy. Pairing his lyrical depth with an early 70’s Phil Pratt style production. An eerie horns line meets the clean sharp, older school backing vocals provided by The Mighty Viceroys to create something magical, the type of record we thought we may have already heard on some scratchy 45 deep in a soundmans crate.
Yakka once again returns to the label on B side duties, providing another Tubby inspired voyage into dusty fx units and quick draw fades. The bassline increases, the vocal decreases but the vibe never ceases.

Hollie Cook - Happy Hour In Dub (Vinyl LP / CD) Merge Records (PRE-ORDER)

    £22.99
On August 11, 2023, Merge Records will release Happy Hour in Dub, a heavenly set of dub versions to pair with Hollie Cook’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Happy Hour. Her first full dub record since 2012, Happy Hour in Dub was coaxed into being by close listening of the original album’s modern lover’s rock.
Cook and Mckone explain:“The reason and inspiration for wanting to make the dub record is because Happy Hour, in its original form, has so many intricate musical details running throughout the songs from the backing vocal and string arrangements to some far more subtle details. And during the mixing process, hearing some of these parts on their own over the drum and bass foundation, we felt there was so much left to explore and expose in the songs and take them to outer space.”
At the controls rejoining Hollie in exploring the space is Happy Hour producer Ben Mckone, who takes her soulful creations and stretches them to their sonic limits, with new vocal features by Josh Skints and Kiko Bun.
